The colourful glitters are known to make any object look glamorous and dazzling under the light. The glitters which have very shining appearance are usually made from inedible polyester plastic. It is the same material which is used to make plastic bottles. Some of the glitters are also made from finely powdered brass. These glitters are not meant to be consumed and should not be used for food decoration. They are available in the market with the label mentioning “Non toxic” which can be very confusing. They might not be very dangerous if eaten by mistake but they are actually not considered safe from health perspective. One must always check the label for the word “Edible” written on it. This means that the glitters are safe for consumption and is also approved by the food standard agency (FSA). The word “Non Toxic” should not be confused with “Edible”.

According to FSA, the glitter manufacturer must provide the supplier with a declaration to prove their compliance in meeting the food safety standards. The suppliers and the stores must also be aware of the constituents of the glitters. The glitters made from edible items or much prevalent organic items may lack in the level of shine but they are very safe to eat. So, never compromise safety with the appearance of the food items.
